The National Food Sharing System (NFSS) is available to all members of Alberta Food Banks and is coordinated nationally by Food Banks Canada.
Through NFSS, Food Banks Canada acquires and shares large industry donations of food and consumer products and coordinate national-level and large-scale food drives for our food bank network, from corporations such as Kraft Canada, Kelloggs, Canada Dry Motts, General Mills, P&G, and many more.
Food Banks Canada then distributes the food to provincial associations according to the HungerCount that is done on a yearly basis. Alberta Food Banks then distributes this food to member food banks throughout their province, according to the count. In 2013, there was 1,427,758 lbs of NFSS food contributed to Alberta through Edmonton’s Food Bank and Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. In addition to that, Alberta Food Banks directly distributed 306,566 lbs of food to 42 member food banks.
To access food from the National Food Share System (NFSS) current Alberta Food Banks members must complete a request form. Food is shipped out in full or mixed pallets from both Edmonton and Calgary.
